Planning Center |
In planning a good new Star Wars look for your car, the first thing you need to do is select a good ship. You should pick something that has lines which are similar to your vehicle, or it won't work. (For example, don't do something silly like trying to get a VW Bug to look like a Star Destroyer.) Look for similar shapes and angles.
Once you've decided on a ship, familiarize yourself with the characteristics and markings of the ship. Pick a few distinctive design elements to re-create. Road Squadron's Reference Gallery might be a good place to get started.
Naturally, some ideas sound better than they look. It helps immensely to create rough visuals of your plans, so you can make a more informed decision. They don't have to look photo-real; they just have to give you an idea of what you're getting in to. Here are some examples of rough plans.
You also want to think about what medium you're going to use. Several members have used professionally-cut vinyl decals, for a very clean and appealingly removable new look. Auto-grade spray paint has also been used, which seems to capture that cheap space-battered Rebel Starfighter look quite well. Some have even, on occasion, been seen applying home-cut contact (shelf) paper for an even more removable and inexpensive alternative. It all depends on the effect you want to achieve, and the ship you chose.
Permanency of the artwork seems to have been the #1 factor holding many of you "die-hards" back from joining the squadron. Now, you have no excuse. *grin*
